Latest Film Reviews
- Jack Reacher [Good] Nice exposition of the layers in, what turns out to be, a familiar tale of corruption. Although the villain was decidedly evil, I didn't feel he was fully developed and the ending was a little open to interpretation, unless we take Jack's comments at face value (which goes against the grain of the film about "doing what's right"). Nevertheless, a good film.

- Wrath of the Titans [Good] A big improvement on the first one, this was simply a roller-coaster action movie set against the mythological backdrop. A customary hat-tip to most of the myths, lavished with large-scale Hollywood ideas. Not much to stimulate the intellect, but creative and action packed.

- Ice Age 4: Continental Drift [Good] I admit I had got a little tired of the series after watching the third instalment, but saw the trailer for this in a TV store showcasing a new Samsung TV and decided it was worth a look. The action was consistently good and funny, the characters' interplay well developed and the dysfunctional family's arc nicely done. Didn't watch it in 3D, but it worked very well as a family movie with some top voice talent.

- Rise of the Guardians [Average] The CG work was exceptional - as you'd come to expect from Dreamworks - though the plot felt a little lacklustre in places. A good family flick with potential for future instalments or prequels which show imagination and poignancy. The idea of this film is to find one's centre - a truism valid for each of us, told through a story. Maybe we can all take note and become better humans ;-)

- Skyfall [Good] This film grew on me. It's a reflection of the changing times, and closes the chapter on the old Bond style (they blew up the DB5) and ushered in the new with a reversion to skill of the agent in the field instead of a reliance on gadgetry. A much more human film, though tech did play it's part with electronic warfare (naturally), and the transition of M and Q were appropriate. Q felt a little too "IT Crowd" which seemed out of place, but holds promise for future instalments.
