Sacha Baron Cohen for me lives on the fringes of comedy – some elements are pure genius and others are crass and insulting. The Dictator was mostly a parody of various dictators from around the world but did cross over into bad taste several times. The comedy is pretty solid and it’s fairly true to its genre (“fish out of water”), though the bad taste elements take the edge off what could have been a better film overall.
Actors: Ben Kingsley
A tale of psychology and suspense told well. DiCaprio plays the part well, as do the rest of the cast, and while the asylum format may have been played many times before and since (e.g. SuckerPunch), Scorcese’s masterful hand and Kalogridis’ excellent screenplay adeptly keep you guessing until the end where all the strands of string are tied together and the puzzle finally makes sense, raising this entry into this canon exemplary.
