The 4 Intelligences: Mind, Body, Emotion, Spirit

I was reading The Fourth Industrial Revolution by Klaus Schwab (2017) last month and the closing chapter took an unexpected approach that relates to my own four-quadrant worldview that we have four principle realms in which we operate – Body, Mind, Emotion and Soul – and need to seek balance in each for our own wellbeing. Much of my work revolves around these four quadrants, and the life wheel builds on this by further compartmentalising different aspects of each, and adding overarching themes which span multiple quadrants. Here’s what Klaus Schwabb said: The Fourth Industrial Revolution may be driving disruption but the challenges it presents are of our own making.…

    Meditation Made Easy

In this video, Mingyur Rinpoche explains the essence of meditation and describes some common misunderstandings about practising meditation. He also shares some tips for bringing meditation into our day-to-day lives. From my own learning about meditation and mindfulness since my initial forays with meditation 30+ years ago, these are 2 key essences of meditation: We are not our thoughts. We are the observer of our thoughts. Meditation is not about achieving the absence of thought, but remaining aware and centred while the thoughts ebb and flow around us. Over time, the thoughts will learn they don’t have your undivided attention and will recede. We will feel greater serenity and greater…

    The Charge

I took Brendon’s course called The 10 Human Drives earlier this year, which is based on this book. The course runs for 90 minutes and is an excellent overview of the 10 human drives. The book takes each one and delves deeper into the research and background with additional case studies from Brendon’s own clients about how he identified these charges lacking within them and helped them turn it around and lead a more transformed and fulfilling life. According to Brendon, we live our lives in one of three states: Caged: We are trapped in the past or in the expectations of others. Those who live caged lives feel tethered to…

Why do so many people feel cut off from the emotions of caring?

I have been reading The Charge by Brendon Burchard this week and if there was ever a person who goes deep and knows about the psychological and emotional make-up of people, I would rank him at the top of the class. You may have noticed I have an interest in this also, especially from an emotional trauma point of view see (Narcissism: A Solar Metaphor) and the science-geek in me always wants to understand why. A lot of the resources I have read and listened to recently talk about the effect of emotional trauma and that there are many studies which show this result to be true, that much of…

Empath Awakening: How to Stop Absorbing Pain, Stress, and Negative Energy from Others and Start Healing

Another easily accessible read from Kara Lawrence which has the usual blend of helpful checklists as well as explorations of the key concepts of being empathetic. I like that Kara does not simply lay out what an empath is and how they function, but she contrasts this with the opposite personality types of ‘energy vampires’ which come in all shapes and sizes and also goes further to provide a shopping list of techniques you (the empath) can use to protect yourself from said ‘vampires’ and other external factors which can deplete your gifts. Here is an overview of the chapters in the book: Chapter One: Are you empathetic? Understanding these…

Toxic Magnetism: How & Why Empaths Attract Narcissists

This book grew on me the second time through. While it doesn’t go deep into aspects of empath or narcissism, it does provide an eloquent contrast between the two personality styles and why they attract each other. The frequent checklists to help you identify where you are and how you may be being affected are useful tools to help you gain clarity and regain inner strength to rise once more and move forward. The book takes you through the stages of a narcissist/empath relationship, including the steps you may have to take to get out. There is no magic bullet but, based on other books I have read on this…

    The 10 Human Drives

I have read a number of Brendon Burchard’s books (Motivation Manifesto, High Performance Habits and Life’s Golden Ticket), have taken his Transformation Week and am studying his Productivity Masterclass also. As many of you will know from the contents of this site, personal improvement is something I take seriously and am always ready to look at new and related materials. So, when an invite came into my inbox to look at unreleased footage of Brendon discussing the 10 Human Drives, I accepted. The course is delivered via growth.com using the Kajabi platform, but you cannot access it unless you’re part of Brendon’s HPX world in some form. You have to…

You Can Thrive After Narcissistic Abuse: The #1 System for Recovering from Toxic Relationships

Having read two other books on narcissism (Narcissist: A Complete Guide to Dealing with a Range of Narcissistic Personalities and The Covert Passive-Aggressive Narcissist: Recognizing the Traits and Finding Healing After Hidden Emotional and Psychological Abuse) I discovered Melania Tonia Evans on YouTube as I was continuing my research into this topic. Melania goes further in this book discussing the various forms of narcissism but takes a different view about how to heal. While Melania recognises that Narcissistic Personality Disorder is very real and very harmful, she puts forward a powerful healing methodology that is based on healing your own wounds and not laying all the blame at the feet…

    Narcissistic Abuse

Having read two other books on the topic, this book did not add very much to what I had already read – hence the rating. It is presented in a series of short chapters which very succinctly outline the subject of the chapter and then summarise what you just read. As an audiobook, I found this format repetitive as it sounded like the narrator read the chapter title, then elaborated on it – which in many cases did not feel much longer than the title, then summarised with a rephrasing of the title. It felt more like a list of things and needed more depth for me. Nevertheless, a good…

Finding Authenticity – On Becoming Human One Year On

In late 2018, I decided I needed to learn more about business as I was running a small restaurant group and needed to fill in a few gaps in my skillset. I also felt overwhelmed and had experienced a series of – for me – significantly stressful events in the course of the business operation. I was working 80+ hours a week with no days off (and have done for 5 years now). I was not in my happy place but resigned myself to the fact that it was “just business” and that’s what being an entrepreneur was all about. But something gnawed at my soul. I saw other entrepreneurs…
