My Fitness Journey: Running and Wellness

My fitness journey has been stop/start for years. I know it is essential to keep fit, raise the heart rate and push the body. It keeps things working in the long-term and helps restore the balance. The body was used to labouring in ancient times – the hunter/gatherer required us to be active – and the body is designed to deliver. But in today’s sedentary times where we have “the good life” (if we’re fortunate enough) we have to bolt on exercise to our regular daily routine. And that’s when it can feel like a chore and we find excuses not to do it. And that’s OK as long as…

    Meditation with Mei-lan Maurits

Would you spend 30 minutes a day to sleep better, feel refreshed and invigorated the next day? Yes, please! Before I tel you about Mei-lan Maurits and her angelic style of meditation music, I think we should cover the bases of what meditation is (and is not) as well as some of the other benefits. What is Meditation? There is a great introduction on Headspace which states: Meditation isn’t about becoming a different person, a new person, or even a better person. It’s about training in awareness and getting a healthy sense of perspective. You’re not trying to turn off your thoughts or feelings. You’re learning to observe them without…

Meditation with Muse 2: My Experience with EEG

I have been meditating since my schooldays – not all the time, but often enough to have developed a good practice. My friends and I were interested in the occult, the paranormal and the esoteric and looked at numerous systems including tarot, meditation, shamanism, angels, Wicca, rune lore, Zen, scrying, ley lines, you name it. We visited a number of groups over the years, went to seminars teaching different spiritual practices and engaged in activities from guided meditation to overtone chanting to crystal workshops to earth energies and more. For me, it was an excellent foundation in what lay on the other side of science (see also my review of…

Finding my Authenticity: Breaking My Chains

When I first had the idea for this blog I settled on the title “The Boy Who Forgot To Live” for the site. This is my journey from being a guy who was not happy with his situation in life – despite many on the outside thinking I “had it all” – to one where I would be very happy. That is still very true of the journey I am on and how I feel, though I changed the name just before launch to “Finding Authenticity” as this seemed more relevant and succinct for what I was doing and what so many others also seem to be seeking. I am…

Home Coming: Reclaiming and Championing Your Inner Child

The audiocassette has been transferred to Audible and presents an enlightening deep-dive into our early years from birth to early school to help us try to figure out where our negative conditioning comes from. This could be around money, love, business, etc, but these formational beliefs we pick up and become conditioned by often limit our potential, even if some of them were “given” to us out of love. The audio mixes presentation and insight with meditation (regression) exercises to help you figure out for yourself where some of your inner demons come from. If you have identified that you may not have had the ideal framework growing up (which…

Judgment Detox: Release the Beliefs That Hold You Back from Living A Better Life

Tricky one this … I listened to the audiobook via Audible. The content of Gabby’s book is, as usual, excellent. The messages are succinct and actionable. However, as the book goes on there are a number of daily meditations. These are great in that they are guided, but you really need to bookmark them to be able to jump in and out later. This is a bit of a challenge to do if you are driving! The format of the book would be better restructured for the medium so that you have the text to listen to with an accompanying audio download for the guided meditations. I believe this exists…

    Stealing Fire

Mind. Blown. The book shed some light onto altered states and how they seem to play an evolutionary role in our species. It investigated the role these states play in organisations ranging from Google to the SEALs, along with its pioneers and more mainstream applications through events such as Burning Man. It was enlightening and documented the risks and rewards of ‘getting out of your head’ (so to speak). If you have watched the Fringe TV show, much of the content of this book won’t be new to you but it will be put into context. Although the book did discuss the role of pharmaceutically induced altered states, it also…
