Empath Awakening: How to Stop Absorbing Pain, Stress, and Negative Energy from Others and Start Healing

Another easily accessible read from Kara Lawrence which has the usual blend of helpful checklists as well as explorations of the key concepts of being empathetic. I like that Kara does not simply lay out what an empath is and how they function, but she contrasts this with the opposite personality types of ‘energy vampires’ which come in all shapes and sizes and also goes further to provide a shopping list of techniques you (the empath) can use to protect yourself from said ‘vampires’ and other external factors which can deplete your gifts. Here is an overview of the chapters in the book: Chapter One: Are you empathetic? Understanding these…

Toxic Magnetism: How & Why Empaths Attract Narcissists

This book grew on me the second time through. While it doesn’t go deep into aspects of empath or narcissism, it does provide an eloquent contrast between the two personality styles and why they attract each other. The frequent checklists to help you identify where you are and how you may be being affected are useful tools to help you gain clarity and regain inner strength to rise once more and move forward. The book takes you through the stages of a narcissist/empath relationship, including the steps you may have to take to get out. There is no magic bullet but, based on other books I have read on this…

    Man’s Search for Meaning

This is a book of two halves. The first part is an autobiographical account of Frankl’s experience in the concentration camps, weaving his psychotherapy insights and discoveries into the narrative. The second part of the book is a synopsis of logotherapy psychotherapy. Personally, I found the second half of the book somewhat dry and the periodic references to other works (including page numbers), while inarguably complete in terms of scientific papers, lost something in the narrative of an audiobook. Also, there is specialised (and long) terminology which might be better read so you have time to re-read the words and gain a fuller understanding. This is why I dropped a…

    The 10 Human Drives

I have read a number of Brendon Burchard’s books (Motivation Manifesto, High Performance Habits and Life’s Golden Ticket), have taken his Transformation Week and am studying his Productivity Masterclass also. As many of you will know from the contents of this site, personal improvement is something I take seriously and am always ready to look at new and related materials. So, when an invite came into my inbox to look at unreleased footage of Brendon discussing the 10 Human Drives, I accepted. The course is delivered via growth.com using the Kajabi platform, but you cannot access it unless you’re part of Brendon’s HPX world in some form. You have to…

    What is your Shadow Self?

Carl Jung stated the Shadow Self to be the unknown dark side of the personality. According to Jung, the Shadow, in being instinctive and irrational, is prone to psychological projection, in which a perceived personal inferiority is recognised as a perceived moral deficiency in someone else. Jung writes that if these projections remain hidden, “The projection-making factor (the Shadow archetype) then has a free hand and can realise its object – if it has one – or bring about some other situation characteristic of its power.” These projections insulate and harm individuals by acting as a constantly thickening veil of illusion between the ego and the real world. I had…

What is Your Real Personality Type (According to Social Media)?

Personality Types & Magic Sauce I have just finished reading the book Platform by Cynthia Johnson which I found excellent. It’s not a book about personality types but addresses this topic early on because your social media profiles tell a lot more about you than you might expect. This post looks at one in-depth tool called Apply Magic Sauce (from Cambridge University) and how you can use it to analyse your own social media profiles across Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and your blogs. I discuss my personal findings below to demonstrate how the tool is spookily accurate in most respects. You can then take the insights and use them to adjust…

Platform (The Art and Science of Personal Branding)

Platform is a book about personal branding and how Cynthia created her own platform to represent herself across the social channels, how she ‘growth hacked’ her profiles to connect to the right people, and the strategies she employed (which you can use too) to accurately position and define how she wanted to be seen online. The book contains a number of easily actionable ‘quick-wins’ in the early stages then delves deeper into game theory and the need to consider the algorithms the social media platforms use when connecting with others; which Cynthia calls the invisible third-party in the connection. The book also contains a lot of other interesting information outside…

You Can Thrive After Narcissistic Abuse: The #1 System for Recovering from Toxic Relationships

Having read two other books on narcissism (Narcissist: A Complete Guide to Dealing with a Range of Narcissistic Personalities and The Covert Passive-Aggressive Narcissist: Recognizing the Traits and Finding Healing After Hidden Emotional and Psychological Abuse) I discovered Melania Tonia Evans on YouTube as I was continuing my research into this topic. Melania goes further in this book discussing the various forms of narcissism but takes a different view about how to heal. While Melania recognises that Narcissistic Personality Disorder is very real and very harmful, she puts forward a powerful healing methodology that is based on healing your own wounds and not laying all the blame at the feet…

    Narcissistic Abuse

Having read two other books on the topic, this book did not add very much to what I had already read – hence the rating. It is presented in a series of short chapters which very succinctly outline the subject of the chapter and then summarise what you just read. As an audiobook, I found this format repetitive as it sounded like the narrator read the chapter title, then elaborated on it – which in many cases did not feel much longer than the title, then summarised with a rephrasing of the title. It felt more like a list of things and needed more depth for me. Nevertheless, a good…
