The Three Questions: How to Discover and Master the Power Within You

I didn’t get into this book as much as I did The Four Agreements, partly because some of it has been covered in that book (as well as others I have read from Don Miguel Ruiz including The Fifth Agreement and The Five Levels of Attachment) and maybe because I thought the narrator did not have the gravitas to make the book sound as authentic as the previous works I mentioned. However, once we get into the three questions themselves, the use of analogies to relate how our psyche interacts with the world and so illuminates the answers to the questions is very interesting. There were many insights within the…

    The Five Levels of Attachment

Five Levels of Attachment reminded me of a satirical piece I wrote in 2016 called Religion because the five levels of attachment range from being essentially detached at the first level through to fanatical attachment at the fifth level and I had also structured the 5 levels from essentially detached to fanatical from my own observation. However, Don Miguel Ruiz explains each level of attachment with clarity and examples we can relate to. This is no satire and contains valuable Toltec knowledge. The early part of the book is a recap of some key points from The Four Agreements and follow-up book, The Fifth Agreement and there is a good…

The Power of the Daily Journal

Do you journal daily? Journalling is all the rage now. There are numerous apps that range from the fluffy to the overly analytical. I have tried four different apps to date – Day One, Stoic (review here), Moodnotes and Jour – and bought three different physical methodologies – High-Performance Planner, Best Self Journal and a Blank Notebook. Some focus on specific aspects of journaling – such as gratitude – while others try to cover the full spectrum. Let’s be clear from the outset that a journal is not a diary, not a summary of what you did and who you did it with (though this can feature), but a much…

    Why Self-Help Books Don’t Work

Have you ever wondered why self-help books don’t work? No matter how many you buy or listen to, or how many courses you start, they just don’t seem to deliver on what they promise. For regular visitors to this site, you’ll see I read a lot of these sorts of books. Many of them come with the “this book changed my life” quote, which helps sell the book, but may not actually deliver the same result for you. Since this is a quote from a reader, it’s not actually a claim of the book, ergo no guarantee the same will happen for you. And I would have to agree –…

The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Personal Growth

Simply outstanding. The simplicity and depth of the wisdom of the four agreements are transformational. Be Impeccable With Your Word, Don’t Take Anything Personally, Don’t Make Assumptions, and Always Do Your Best. don Miguel Ruiz exposes the layers of fog we are conditioned by (domesticated with) and cuts through this fog with the four foundational agreements above which surpass all others. He explains how and why we have our manyfold beliefs and thoughts (our own personal agreements), and how we choose to accept the agreements of others through early life. This, again, echoes many of the personal development books of today which look at our own failings. Some look at…
